This exhibition in the historic Gallery will draw on the library collection in order to show some of our early printed works.
This will be the first time that our incunabula will be shown in a single exhibition.
This event is free, but normal admission charges apply for the venue.
Assistance dogs are welcome.

That Continuous Thing: Artists and the Ceramics Studio, 1920 – Today

Friday, 31st March 2017 until Sunday, 3rd September 2017

Exploring the diverse forms, energies and locations that define the modern ceramics studio.
The ceramics studio has always been a place where tradition meets experimentation. Spanning 100 years, this exhibition explores the diverse forms, energies and locations that define the modern studio. Ranging from the rise of studio pottery in the 1910s to a number of new commissions by a young generation of UK-based artists, That Continuous Thing – a quote from the American artist Peter Voulkos – traces the changing shape of the ceramics studio over the last century.
Opening with exchange between Japan and the UK in the 1910s and ’20s through the emergence of studio potters such as Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada (who moved from Japan to St Ives in 1920), William Staite Murray and Dora Billington, the exhibition leads on to the Californian ‘clay revolution’ of the 1950s and ‘60s, with sculptures by the pioneering sculptor Voulkos and his students, including Ken Price, Rudy Autio and Ron Nagle. A specially commissioned series of ceramic sculptures by the young British artist Jesse Wine will be included in response to the display. The final section of the exhibition, developed with artist Aaron Angell, recalls artists working in London in the ‘70s and 80s, celebrating the experimental work of Gillian Lowndes, Richard Slee and other ‘hand-building’ contemporaries. These will be shown alongside a presentation of works by a number artists – including Anthea Hamilton – made over the last three years at Angell’s London-based Troy Town Art Pottery, which he describes as ‘a radical and psychedelic workshop for artists’.
Supported by the Victoria and Albert Museum, Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, Japan Foundation and Idlewild Trust.

Jessica Warboys

Friday, 31st March 2017 until Sunday, 3rd September 2017

Jessica Warboys will fill the sea-facing galleries at Tate St Ives with specially commissioned work, alongside films, sculptures and large-scale paintings.
Her work is informed by personal or collective memories – historical, mythical or fictional – and this solo show will consider her use of symbolism, form and her approach to landscape.
Warboys often employs natural elements in making her works. The exhibition will feature specially commissioned Sea Paintings, which will immerse the galleries overlooking Porthmeor Beach, in floor-to-ceiling colour. Made on the Zennor coast, near St Ives, these enormous unframed canvases have pigment applied directly on them before being submerged in the waves. They are a physical document of Warboys’ collaboration with the sea, but will provide a backdrop to several new sculptures in the lower gallery. An installation of objects that reoccur across Warboys’ practice in film, performance and exhibitions, will be designed for the showcase. New forms and paintings will be also included in this one-off playful installation.

A Certain Kind of Light

Thursday, 25th May 2017 until Saturday, 23rd September 2017

A Certain Kind of Light: Light in Art Over Six Decades is a major exhibition exploring how artists have responded to light, its transience and effect. Encompassing paintings, sculpture, photography, and installation, it features artworks created from the 1960s to the present day by fifteen leading artists.
The exhibition considers the different ways artists have explored the various aspects of light, from its importance as a source of illumination, as a pure sculptural material, as a mysterious force and as a source of energy that can be conceptually converted into other forms.
It includes Colour Construction by Peter Lanyon who was a leading figure at Newlyn Art Gallery in the 1950s and 60s, as well as camera-less photographs by Garry Fabian Miller who had a solo show here in 2008.
As part of the exhibition, and to mark the tenth anniversary of the opening of The Exchange, Cornwall-based artist Peter Freeman will reprogramme and update Lightwave, the dramatic artwork illuminating the glass façade of The Exchange that he first created when the gallery opened in 2007.
Artists in the exhibition: Roger Ackling, David Batchelor, Angela Bulloch, Garry Fabian Miller, Ceal Floyer, Peter Freeman, Raphael Hefti, Anish Kapoor, Peter Lanyon, Rut Blees Luxemburg, Julian Opie, John Riddy, Mark Titchner, Paul Winstanley, Toby Ziegler.

Stanhope Forbes: Father of the Newlyn School

Saturday, 10th June 2017 until Saturday, 9th September 2017

Stanhope Forbes (1857 – 1947) was one of the ‘greats’ of the Newlyn School artists’ colony which flourished from the 1880s onwards. Although by no means the first artist to set up in Newlyn, Forbes’s arrival galvanised the emerging art community and helped to build its national and international reputation. For this reason, he is often dubbed the ‘Father of the Newlyn School’, which reflects both his significance and his popularity.  Born in Dublin, Forbes trained at the Royal Academy Schools in London and finished his studies at Bonnat’s studio in Paris. After arriving in Newlyn in 1884, his national reputation was established a year later with the acceptance of his masterpiece, Fish Sale on a Cornish Beach at the Royal Academy. Comprising a stunning selection of key works from all periods of Forbes’s career, this exhibition celebrates his consummate skill as an artist. Throughout the Galleries.

The Members' Annual Summer Exhibition 2017

Tuesday, 8th August 2017 until Saturday, 26th August 2017

The Poly Falmouth August 8th sees the opening of the Members’ Annual Summer Exhibition at the Poly Falmouth. This exhibition has been running on and off since the building was constructed in 1836, for the very purpose of holding this annual event.
The Members’ Exhibition has always been a very popular show, built up from small beginnings to its heyday of over 60 exhibitors showing 400 paintings in three floors of galleries. This was a huge task to hang, but luckily the Poly has had a dedicated team of volunteers over the years.
This year, paintings, ceramics, jewellery and sculpture will all be exhibited side by side for an eye-catching and diverse display of local art.
Free to visit, the exhibition will be running from August 8th to 26th in the Poly’s Main Gallery.

Imogen Allen 'Living Roots'

Thursday, 10th August 2017 until Wednesday, 30th August 2017

Imogen Allen invites you to her first solo exhibition.
This show features a selection of works completed over the past year.
'Living Roots,'  a phrase in a Seamus Heaney poem, titled 'Digging.'  seems to encapsulate a running theme of imagination, and the roots of thoughts, emotions and perceptions within the mind.
Imogen's paintings aim to express something primal about humanity and experience which is therefore universal.
Living roots questions in various ways 'what are we?,' and perhaps even 'where do we come from?'
'Christopher dreaming' an oil painting by  Imogen has been shortlisted for the National Open Art Competition.
See website for opening times.

Rhythms of Dancing Light by Ant Viney

Tuesday, 15th August 2017 until Tuesday, 5th September 2017

When I make marks on canvas, I often find they form rhythms that dance across the surface of my work. These rhythms are fundamental to the way I construct my paintings.
The rhythms I see all around me in the Cornish landscape are the primary source of inspiration for this exhibition.

Cornish landscapes

Tuesday, 22nd August 2017 until Friday, 25th August 2017

This inspiring four day landscape painting course takes students to paint in a number of dramatic coastal locations which are off the beaten track and intensely beautiful. The course will take in some of West Cornwall's most special places such as the coast path near to Lamorna Cove, Penberth Cove and the cliffs above Cape Cornwall among other spots.
Maggie O’Brien will help students to create highly individual, atmospheric works which express the essence of Cornwall. The course enables students to try their hand at painting with oil making studies with the supportive presence of Maggie always on hand encouraging students to try new things and find their own favoured techniques. For some painting with oil will be a new experience and with lots of help from Maggie past students have found that it's become quite addictive.
This work may be figurative or abstract or occupy the exciting ground between the two.
Teaching will be tailored to individual need and include one to one tuition and group demonstrations using a variety of tools such as brushes, knives, sticks, hands, rags etc and a variety of paints and drawing materials and techniques.

Expressive Landscape five day course

Saturday, 26th August 2017 until Wednesday, 30th August 2017

The Expressive Landscape five day course taught by artist Jack Davis is a fantastic new course aimed at freeing up your approach to landscape painting. Jack breaks down the painting process encouraging students to respond intuitively to the landscape. The course includes tuition with a variety of different paints and supports exploring how each different painting surface affects the process and the results. The painting methods used on the course are often far from traditional and as such it is a real eye opener in regard to new ways of working. At the heart of the course is always the response to the dramatic landscape of West Cornwall. Jack is an amazingly positive, sensitive and inspiring tutor who always manages to get the best out of people.
The course is open to all levels of experience from near beginners through to more advanced practicing artists.
With some coastal path walking the course requires a basic level of fitness.

Oddsocks Theatre - Macbeth

Sunday, 27th August 2017

Oddsocks Theatre present Macbeth
Shakespeare’s dramatic story of ambition turned bad is brought vividly to life in Oddsocks’ hilarious new musical adaptation. Set in an orderly and steampunk-style world of value and decency, the ruling monarch Duncan holds sway with a caring, iron fist. His chief warlords Macbeth and Banquo return triumphantly from the battle field – The Boys are Back in Town and on the way discover supernatural assistance in the trio of the three weird sisters and soon they are on course for promotions. Awaiting his return is Macbeth’s ambitious Killer Queen wife. Although Macbeth needs convincing that they will one day be Royals she releases the devil within him and soon there’s blood on his hands. One murder leads to another and another until pretty soon Macbeth’s on a killing spree: Don’t stop me now. But You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet because revenge is on it’s way. Macbeth realizes there’s a Ghost in my House and Lady Macbeth is slipping into a Mad World of her own making and maybe in need of a Frontier Psychiatrist. Macbeth begins to lose control and his Live and Let Die has him Free Falling. With the audience’s help though, good soldier Macduff takes Macbeth to task and in a final explosive battle ensures that Scotland is All Right Now.

The Odyssey - (Greek Stuff!)

Wednesday, 30th August 2017

Based on the epic poem by Homer.
From the makers of ‘Great Expectations’ and ‘Dracula’ comes a tale more exciting than excitement itself: The Odyssey.
If ever a show was designed for the smallest venues, this is it; a compact piece of theatre magic.
David Mynne’s skill with just a few simple props, a rubber face and clear and concise storytelling will fill your hall with drama and delight!
This year he’s going to hell and back in the company of Heroes, Gods and Monsters.
A host of exciting characters – including a one-eyed Cyclops, a six-headed monster and the terrifying Sea God Poseidon – will conjure up a mighty storm and keep you on the edge of your seat.
There will be a ‘cast of thousands’.
There may be a bit of water. And there will certainly be a laugh or two.
David Mynne is a founder member of Cornwall’s legendary Kneehigh Theatre.

Exploring Colour course

Thursday, 31st August 2017 until Friday, 1st September 2017

Luke Frost is well known for his exciting use of colour and comes from a line of celebrated colourists including his grandfather Sir Terry Frost and his father Anthony. This exciting course explores how to capture, mix and combine found colours with paint.
The course starts with a session down at Newlyn Harbour where Luke will help students to explore the process of making studies from the colours and forms found among the surrounding fishing boats, empty crates, nets, sea and harbour walls. Returning to the school the group will be given a series of exercises to help them approach colour contrasting and combining. Each student will tackle this differently some focusing closely on the colours and forms recorded down in the harbour while others may choose to work in a more abstract way.
Luke will discuss his approach to painting with some examples of his work to hand and with lots of art books and exhibition catalogues on modern and contemporary artists he will help students to understand how a number of well known artists have explored colour in their work such as John Hoyland and Patrick Heron among others.
Much of the course will be hands on with a huge array of mixed pots of paints shared between the group so they can dart back and forth between the colours and their work all the time being encouraged to explore how colours are informed by those around them.
The course also includes experimenting with coloured paint applied to different surfaces from paper and board through to aluminium and their impact on painted colour.
All materials are included in the price of this course.

The Country Wife

Monday, 4th September 2017 until Friday, 8th September 2017

The Country Wife by William Wycherley presented by The Questors Theatre
The Country Wife is the classic Restoration comedy. This full-blooded and witty comedy is accompanied in this production by live music.
The Country Wife has come to town, and ‘town’, of course, is London, that well-known centre of intrigue and vice. Horner, the notorious womaniser, has spotted her - so the pursuit is on, although this isn’t stopping Horner hunting down other game.
performances September 4 to 8 at 8pm and September 5 and 7 at 2pm
Meanwhile, his friend Harcourt has fallen head over heels in love with the beautiful Alithea. Unfortunately, she’s engaged to the ridiculous Sparkish, a would-be wit and full time fop, so there is some ingenious work to be done.
And that’s just the beginning of the plot in William Wycherley’s glorious 1675 comedy, ‘The Country Wife’, set in the Restoration period after the return of Charles II to the throne, setting the tone for  a society bent on pleasure-seeking and the flaunting of fashion. The only sin is being found out.

New Visions by Canon Robin Murch

Wednesday, 6th September 2017 until Tuesday, 3rd October 2017

Robin Murch, is a retired Anglican priest, who in retirement year 2000, took up art as a pass time activity. The pictures usually take care of themselves and end up only broadly like the initial ideas. The inspirations drip into the mind as the work progresses and beg expression. All this Robin finds as exciting fun. Over time Robin has developed the New Visions Project, which brings some pictures to be exhibited in Churches to assist with their outreach.

Forged Line Dance Company present Lina

Friday, 8th September 2017

Lina is a new duet by Forged Line Dance Company, exploring the lives and obsessions of brother and sister William and Caroline Herschel.
Both talented musicians and celebrated astronomers, they studied the universe and mapped the stars from their garden in 18th Century Bath.
Lina delves into the caring yet complex relationship between William and Caroline, where family ties are tested by individual ambition. Music merges into science, art becomes mathematics, and a brother and sister, far from home, change how we see the universe forever.
Featuring an original soundtrack incorporating music by William Herschel, this intimate and emotionally charged yet playful duet is inspired by themes of creativity, invention and frustration that shaped their extraordinary story.
An introductory short film offers a fascinating insight into the Herschels’ lives, bringing their world of dedication and discovery to life.
Created specially to accompany the live performance, the film was made in association with the Herschel Museum of Astronomy and the William Herschel Society.

Associated Territories Exhibition

Saturday, 16th September 2017 until Friday, 6th October 2017

Our exhibition presents the works of four female artists from the Tri-city, Pomerania, Poland.
The Work consists of drawings, paintings and batiks. The subjects which interest us in our creativity are varied - these are our individual 'territories', which we are 'associating' in the framework of our common exhibitions and this is the potential of our informal group. We are not connected by the same slogans, ideas or beliefs, what associates us is the similar attitude to our work and the inner need for co-operation. This sort of attitude has created long lasting artistic friendships, common activity and common aims. All of us to a certain degree and meaning are leaders, but at the same time we want to share our work and be actively associating our individual territories.
Exhibition open 11-3. 16th Sept - 6th Oct Tues - Sat

John Armstrong: Dream & Reality

Saturday, 16th September 2017 until Saturday, 18th November 2017

This exhibition examines the diverse range of work produced over the lifetime of this intriguing artist. John Armstrong ARA (1893 - 1973) studied briefly at St John’s Wood School of Art but was essentially self-taught. His one-man exhibition in 1928 established him in avant-garde circles, including that of Unit One with Ben Nicholson, Paul Nash and others. He later became deeply involved in theatre and film, designing sets for the Royal Ballet and costumes for ten of Alexander Korda’s epic films. After the war, he spent a period of time in Lamorna before returning to London and continuing his eclectic style that encompassed still life and classicism alongside larger, more abstract works. Ground floor galleries. A selection of Newlyn School paintings on view upstairs in Gallery 5.

Patience

Monday, 18th September 2017 until Friday, 22nd September 2017

Patience by W.S. Gilbert and A Sullivan presented by Cambridge University G. and S. Society.
The opera is a satire on the aesthetic movement of the 1870s and ’80s in England and, more broadly, on fads, superficiality, vanity, hypocrisy and pretentiousness; it also satirizes romantic love, rural simplicity and military bluster.
Rival poets, Victorian groupies, soldiers and milkmaids compete for affection in this witty satire on the aesthetic craze of the 1880s.

Hansel and Gretel

Tuesday, 26th September 2017 until Friday, 29th September 2017

Hansel and Gretel by Humperdinck presented by Pop-Up Opera.
Pop-up Opera is an innovative touring opera company dedicated to making opera enjoyable and inviting, without losing the quality of musical performance. They aim to broaden the appeal of opera and to challenge the way opera is performed, by taking it into unusual spaces and making it fun, fresh and intimate.
Magical and dark, this is perhaps the most popular operatic fairy tale of them all. Brother and sister Hansel and Gretel are drawn into the idyllic yet dangerous world of the forest, where they encounter the Sandman, the Dew Fairy and, most frightening of all, the Witch.
In the dizzying excitement of the Witch’s Ride and the serene beauty of the children’s evening prayer, Humperdinck’s music magically evokes the contrasting worlds of the story.
Performances September 26 and 29 at 7.30pm and September 28 at 2pm

Cornwall flute workshop: explore techniques to make your tone sparkle

Sunday, 5th November 2017

Join us in Cornwall this Guy Fawkes Day for a half-day flute workshop.
Explore tips and techniques to make your tone sparkle (just in time for the fireworks later on).
If you’ve always wanted to tap into a beautifully resonant flute tone but are not sure how, then this flute workshop is for you. Spend a morning with American flautist and teacher Jessica to learn techniques to simplify the mystery of a stunning tone no matter which genre you play. Replace tone development dread with confidence and delight. Learn contemporary flute techniques that will help you refine, strengthen and deepen your understanding of the tools needed to create resonance in your playing. We’ll go beyond ‘just playing long notes’ and delve into topics such as extended techniques, vibrato, dynamic control and breathwork.
At the end of this one-day workshop you will be able:
Explore how your flute headjoint, body posture, mouth and throat positioning can be tweaked for your best sound.
Learn a variety of exercises that you can put into your daily practice routine to deepen into refining dynamics, articulation, lip flexibility and vibrato control.
Tea, coffee, and biscuits will be provided for you during your breaktimes.
Suitable for players that are approx. Gr. 3/4+ to advanced, including teachers, all ages welcome.
