Incunables: the infancy of printing

Saturday, 4th March 2017 until Tuesday, 31st October 2017

Incunables: the infancy of printing as seen in the Lanhydrock library.
Incunables is a term that refers to early books printed in Europe before 1501.
Lanhydrock has 28 of this type of book, unusually high for a private collection.
This exhibition in the historic Gallery will draw on the library collection in order to show some of our early printed works.
This will be the first time that our incunabula will be shown in a single exhibition.
This event is free, but normal admission charges apply for the venue.
Assistance dogs are welcome.
Accessibility: steps are on the route to the Long Gallery.

John Armstrong: Dream & Reality

Saturday, 16th September 2017 until Saturday, 18th November 2017

This exhibition examines the diverse range of work produced over the lifetime of this intriguing artist. John Armstrong ARA (1893 - 1973) studied briefly at St John’s Wood School of Art but was essentially self-taught. His one-man exhibition in 1928 established him in avant-garde circles, including that of Unit One with Ben Nicholson, Paul Nash and others. He later became deeply involved in theatre and film, designing sets for the Royal Ballet and costumes for ten of Alexander Korda’s epic films. After the war, he spent a period of time in Lamorna before returning to London and continuing his eclectic style that encompassed still life and classicism alongside larger, more abstract works. Ground floor galleries. A selection of Newlyn School paintings on view upstairs in Gallery 5.

Robyn Denny

Saturday, 23rd September 2017 until Saturday, 6th January 2018

A solo exhibition celebrating the work of the painter Robyn Denny presented across both our venues.
Robyn Denny (1930-2014) was one of an internationally acclaimed group who transformed British art in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, leading it into the international mainstream. His large-scale, resolutely urban abstract paintings captured the cool, modernising mood of the time yet have a sombre and enigmatic presence that makes them seem paradoxically timeless.

Robyn Denny

Saturday, 23rd September 2017 until Saturday, 6th January 2018

A solo exhibition celebrating the work of the painter Robyn Denny (1930-2014) is to be presented across both our venues this autumn.
Denny was one of an internationally acclaimed group who transformed British art in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, leading it into the international mainstream. His resolutely urban, large-scale abstract paintings captured the cool, modernising mood of the time. He graduated from RCA in 1957, and within a decade was enjoying considerable international success, alongside his contemporaries Howard Hodgkin, Bridget Riley, Peter Blake and David Hockney. In 1966 he represented Britain at the Venice Biennale with Anthony Caro, Bernard Cohen, Harold Cohen and Richard Smith and at the time of his 1973 Tate retrospective he was the youngest artist to be so honoured.
This exhibition is a celebration of the work of an artist key to British abstraction, who kept his eye firmly on America and his London contemporaries. This exhibition, concurrently presented at Newlyn Art Gallery and The Exchange in Penzance, offers an in-depth understanding of the evolution of his work over five decades and an exploration of the importance and contemporary relevance of his work. Importantly, the exhibition will draw attention to later works, dating from the early 1980s and beyond, which have rarely been presented publicly before.

Cheshire Cats

Thursday, 9th November 2017

Martyn Joseph

Thursday, 9th November 2017

Juxtaposition is a key theme in Martyn’s work.
The simplicity and the complexity of the human condition and all that it encompasses is underpinned with a heady promise of hope.
There is a versatility to Martyn’s music that is hard to categorise. Many have tried, resulting in labels such as Folk, Rock, Soul, Folk Funk and Americana; all of which somehow miss the mark.
But sometimes music doesn’t need a defining genre and with the ability to articulate a sense of the bigger picture, Martyn’s music and social commentary manage to empower and speak for many. His songs are pictures, and stories, and feelings all put to music and delivered by a master craftsman.

Keith James : The Songs of Nick Drake

Thursday, 16th November 2017

This concert begins with an introductory set of timeless songs by brilliant songwriters – all contemporary with Nick Drake:  Richard Thompson, Roy Harper, Sandy Denny, Al Stewart, Vashti Bunyan, John Martyn, Bridget St John and Bert Jansch.
Also featured are two poems by William Blake which Keith has set to guitar arrangements based on Nick’s unique style.
Nick Drake is the most revered and loved of all this country’s singer/songwriters. He recorded three cherished Albums between 1969 and 1972 but was almost entirely unknown in his day. After his tragic death in 1974, aged only 26, his music almost disappeared into obscurity.

Life Girl Friday 17th November - 7:30 pm

Friday, 17th November 2017

Life Girl is a storytelling show all about living alone without being lonely. Jane compares her life with Robinson Crusoe’s and offers invaluable insights on lighting fires and surviving in the jungle. No she doesn’t, that’s a big, fat lie. She can tell you how to fix a car with one finger – by speed dialling the garage and crying down the phone. Has funny bits, sad bits and rude bits… but haven’t we all?
Written and performed by Jane Pugh
Directed by Tori Cannell

His debut album Sweet England changed the sound of Folk and won a brace of awards for its innovative melding of orchestration and electronica. Subsequent albums embraced everything from grime to Johnny Marr-esque guitar pop, but at their heart was Jim’s unmistakeable soulful and yearning voice; singing old songs in a new way.
His latest album Upcetera heralds a new chapter, receiving the best reviews of his career, including five stars from Mojo, fRoots and R2 magazines. He has also found the time to contribute three new songs to BBC Dr Who spin-off show Class, and launched his own Low Culture Podcast.

Bash Street Theatre Co. – The Lion Tamer

Thursday, 23rd November 2017

The Lion Tamer is one of a trilogy of silent movie shows from the award-winning Bash Street Theatre Co.
Inspired by the comic genius of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, it has been specially designed to tour village halls and small-scale theatres.
It’s a melodrama full of action, pathos and silent comedy, combining circus skills, slapstick humour and live piano music to recreate a black-and-white movie from the golden age of the silver screen.
A ‘two-bit’ circus has arrived in town. It’s run by a crooked showman and his long-suffering assistant, and they are running out of acts. So when a down-at-heel traveller arrives looking for work, he is given an audition. But he takes on more than he bargained for when he is persuaded to become a last-minute replacement for … The Lion Tamer!
THE LION TAMER is inspired by the 1928 Charlie Chaplin film ‘The Circus’ and follows in the style of our two successful silent-movie street theatre productions, Cliffhanger! And The Strongman.
Based in Penzance, Cornwall, Bash Street Theatre has built an international reputation for inventive, fast-moving street theatre shows. Since our first performance, in Morlaix, France in 1991, we have created more than 20 different shows and toured extensively throughout the UK and Europe, with performances in France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, Scandanavia, Poland, Romania, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Italy, Portugal and Spain where, in 2006, we won the ‘Best Street Theatre’ award at the prestigious Tàrrega Theatre Festival, with our black-and-white movie show Cliffhanger!
We have also performed in Israel, Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea and Egypt.
Bash Street Theatre is a small independent company run by partners, Simon Pullum and JoJo Pickering, who founded the company 25 years ago. During this time our aim has been to combine circus skills and live music to develop a non-verbal, theatrical performance style that is accessible to all ages, cultures and backgrounds.

The Twelve Days of Christmas

Saturday, 25th November 2017

It is the eve before Christmas, 1895, when a Miss Elizabeth Fairfax (a sensible sort of lady leading a very ordinary sort of life), receives a visit from the dashing Mr Edward Fitzwilliam. Mr Edward is at once enchanted by Miss Elizabeth’s beauty and decides, right and there, that he will marry Miss Fairfax. But since she is the most charming creature he has ever seen, he decides that no ordinary wooing will do.
But what to get a lady of such extraordinary charm and beauty? Luckily for Mr Edward, the local townsfolk have plenty of suggestions (and plenty of things they’re trying to sell).
As Mr Edward puts himself under further pressure to ‘top’ the last gift with something more unique, poor Miss Elizabeth tries to cope with the ever growing number of presents in her house (most of which seem to be livestock). As the presents become more ludicrous, Miss Elizabeth’s house begins to represent something between a “menagerie and an asylum” and her surly household staff, Jenson and Cooky begin to lose control of the estate.
But will Mr Edward win Miss Elizabeth’s heart? Will the lawn ever be the same again? And where on earth is Cooky?

Peter Knight’s Gigspanner

Saturday, 25th November 2017

His departure from folk-rock pioneers Steeleye Span has enabled fiddle player Peter Knight to turn his full attention to his trio Gigspanner. In the process he has established their reputation as one of the most genuinely ground-breaking forces on the British folk scene.
Gigspanner has introduced a whole new audience to the extraordinary musicianship of Peter Knight, a violinist whom many consider to be in a league of his own.
One of our most popular acts at Calstock Arts, their 2017 visit celebrates the launch of their brand new studio album, The Wife of Urban Law. Peter is joined by Roger Flack on guitar and Sacha Trochet on percussion, both powerful and intelligent musicians in their own right.
Doors and bar 7.00pm, start time 8.00pm

Etsy Makers Christmas Fair

Friday, 1st December 2017 until Sunday, 3rd December 2017

This Etsy Makers Christmas Fair, at The Guildhall, in St Ives, is part of the national Etsy Made Local weekend (Friday, 1st December until Sunday, 3rd December 2017): and following on from a fantastic fair last year (we had over 3000 visitors) we've got some brilliant things planned for this year.
It'll be a modern Christmas fair with a magical Narnia theme, taking place in the heart of St Ives, kicking off the same night as Father Christmas arrives by boat with a special, woodland cocktail party.
We were pleased to be awarded a generous bursary by Etsy to help with the cost of putting on the fair: so this has allowed us to keep the price of stands very low for makers, providing an inclusive event encouraging the wealth of talent we have in Cornwall. It's great for us to collaborate and share our skills, experience and ideas to put on the best show ever. We've also collaborated with other local organisations and businesses including: * providing a collection box for Food Bank, * local musicians will be performing * hosting a pop-up deli cafe from the Green Deli * Renowned Newquay bar Tom Thumb will be keeping us well-oiled with woodland-inspired cocktails on the opening night party.
From over 140 applications for stands, we whittled down the exhibitor list to 40 makers selling the very highest quality products for people wanting to buy modern, handmade, unique presents for Christmas. We've got some brilliant, award-winning companies exhibiting, including Katy Luxton Jewellery, Amy Cooper Ceramics, Helen Round Textiles and Lou Tonkin, print-maker. Shoppers will be able to see: * modern ceramicists * stylish home-wares * hand-printed textiles * unusual jewellery designers * experienced glass-makers * found sculptors.
We will be keeping our social media accounts updated with news and information about the event so yuo can follow is on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. We're aiming to keep this group going as a non-profit group to support local makers in Cornwall, and put on regular contemporary craft events in the future.

Flats and Sharps

Saturday, 2nd December 2017

2017 has been another big year for young Cornish outfit Flats and Sharps: a hit debut album, nationwide sell out shows and a packed festival schedule including Australia, U.S.A, Ireland and mainland Europe. The band continue to gain new fans wherever they play.
Hailing from Penzance, in the South West of England, Flats and Sharps blur the lines between Bluegrass, Folk, Country & Pop, performing their own highly original songs as well as their renditions of Bluegrass classics. These five incredible young musicians have honed their skills in 400 live performances over five years, charming and wowing audiences along the way.
Flats and Sharps have come a long way from their humble beginning busking in Penzance as 17 year-olds to performing on the Town Square stage at the Country 2 Country Festival at the O2 in London, at Proms in Hyde Park, London which was recorded for later broadcast on the Bob Harris Country show on BBC Radio 2. Along the way that have played for (and with) the Governor of Kentucky (who jumped on stage to play with them), won fans at scores of festivals including Isle of Wight, Isle of Man, Maverick, Ireland’s Westport Folk and Bluegrass Festival and many Bluegrass and Folk Festivals in Europe
Flats and Sharps are ones to watch out for, five talented young men who make friends wherever they play.

The Little Match Girl

Thursday, 14th December 2017

“Her little hands were almost numbed with cold. Oh! a match might afford her a world of comfort, if she only dared take a single one out of the bundle, draw it against the wall, and warm her fingers by it. She drew one out.
“Rischt!” how it blazed, how it burnt! It was a warm, bright flame, like a candle, as she held her hands over it: it was a wonderful light.”
London. The last evening of the year. The snow is falling. A little girl struggles fiercely through the dark streets. In a vain attempt to stay warm she strikes a match, then a second and third. In the fatal cold the flames blaze to life and the friendly flickering fire guides her to fantastic Christmas visions. With each strike we are transported into her tumultuous hopes and dreams.
In this magic, humorous and poignant show, The Last Baguette use physical comedy, live music and visual storytelling to shine a light on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic winter tale.

Christmas.Time.

Tuesday, 19th December 2017

Christmas.Time. is set in a small prison cell, Charlie and Toby are feeling low, and why wouldn’t they? It’s Christmas Day and they’re serving time at Her Majesty’s pleasure. A Christmas cabaret ensues, and they set off on their festival of carols, Claus, Christ and custody.
Join them on a fantastical adventure through Dickens, pantomime, musical, Christmas dinner and Christmas films! See as they build a wonderfully Merry Christmas around them with songs, snowmen and lots of laughs in this truly festive show that puts the ‘cell’ firmly back in ‘celebration’.
Written by Daniel Richards and Ciaran Clarke, and directed by Simon Harvey (o-region, Kneehigh) Christmas. Time. is a musical comedy for all the family and a fun, festive and fantastically funny Christmas offering from Near-ta Theatre!
