Janet Cardiff - Forty Part Motet

Friday, 25th May 2018 until Monday, 27th August 2018

Janet Cardiff’s internationally acclaimed sound installation Forty Part Motet (2001) is at Richmond Chapel in Penzance, a former Wesleyan Chapel and Grade II listed building, usually closed to the public. Cardiff has reworked 16th-century composer Thomas Tallis’s choral masterpiece Spem in alium nunquam habui by recording 40 individual male voices from the Salisbury Cathedral Choir (bass, baritone, alto, tenor and child soprano) and playing each individual voice through its own speaker. The speakers are carefully positioned in eight different groups of five. Each group forms a choir of five singers with different vocal ranges so that the visitor can move amongst the 40 speakers to listen to single voices, or be immersed in the overall complexity of the choral ensemble.
The recording took place in a hall on the grounds of the cathedral. When the singers took a break during the three-hour session, Cardiff and sound editor Georges Bures Miller decided to keep recording; the singers talking and other sounds can be heard as an interlude in the final work, creating an intimate, direct connection between singers and listeners.
A Groundwork exhibition presented by Newlyn Art Gallery and The Exchange.
Groundwork is a season of international contemporary art in Cornwall from May to September 2018. With a focus on place and an emphasis on moving image, sound and performance, the programme presents new commissions made in Cornwall, together with existing works by internationally acclaimed artists. Groundwork is organised by Helston-based arts organisation CAST (Cornubian Arts and Science Trust).
Launch Weekend: 5 - 7 May 2018

Rose Wylie at The Exchange

Saturday, 9th June 2018 until Saturday, 15th September 2018

History painting.
Rose Wylie is best known for creating colourful, large-scale, figurative paintings that are smart, funny, and quietly political. These are usually made from memory and draw on a wide range of cultural references from history, fashion and cinema, to mythology, sport and literature. The thread linking these fields is her interest in how images evolve and accumulate meaning – becoming familiar, iconic and part of the narrative of popular culture and wider history.
At The Exchange, alongside works inspired by Quentin Tarantino films, and her memories of London during the Second World War, will be a selection of preparatory works on paper.
History Painting is a Plymouth Art Centre exhibition and curated by Ben Borthwick. The exhibition will be shown across both our galleries.

Saturday, 9th June 2018 until Saturday, 15th September 2018

History painting.

The large scale paintings at Newlyn Art Gallery include three recent works inspired by the Pilgrims ship the Mayflower voyage, which had a final landing at Newlyn to take on fresh water before sailing to America in 1620. In the lower gallery we will present Ben Rivers’ film What Means Something (2015) which reflects on his friendship with Rose, her painting and the artistic processes they have in common.

Materials of painting

Wednesday, 25th July 2018 until Friday, 27th July 2018

This fascinating three-day course led by Nina Royle is a must for any artist who would like to bring a richer understanding of the qualities of paint and the importance of the painting surface into their work.
On the course students will consider how their personal painting styles are affected by the qualities and characteristics of materials used and how they have been applied to the surface of the support they are working on. How also can meaning in their work be strengthened, by investing time into a deep and rich understanding of these aspects in painting?
On each day of the course a different painting material or surface to work on will be selected as a guide for enquiry. These will be introduced with a short talk given by Nina that will touch on how the materials in question are made, where they are sourced from and their use historically. The talks will be delivered in an informative yet creative way that will inspire a different way of thinking about materials.
On day one of the course students will learn how to make traditional gesso panels with rabbit skin glue and whiting. This is a painting ground that has a beautiful warm, absorbent texture, which can acquire an ivory-like finish when polished. The panels lend themselves to being painted on in a number of ways that will also be explored, alongside the idea of why a painting ground is integral to painting.
Day two will look at the concept of variety through a limited palette of black and white pigments mixed with aqueous binders. Ink as a material will also be looked at. Opposed to considering black and white as non-colours or as contrasts of light and dark, Nina will introduce them as colours in their own right, possessing a diversity of shades. The differences between various commonly available blacks and white paint colours will also be explored.
Day three will be a more general look at coloured pigments with a special focus on their history of use in oil paint. Students will make their own oil paint and explore a range of different binders and mediums that can be used to alter it’s properties. In doing this students will explore the benefits and drawbacks of making their own paint.
An unmissable opportunity to explore how you can engage more with the qualities of the paints and surfaces you use as an artist.
Visit their event web page for more details.

Wizz Jones

Friday, 3rd August 2018

Wizz began his musical career at the age of 18 leading a Country and Skiffle band called “The Wranglers” in his hometown of Croydon, Surrey in 1957. He had been inspired to take up the acoustic guitar a year or so before this after hearing such guitar luminaries as Big Bill Broonzy, Rambling Jack Elliot and Muddy Waters playing at a club in London organized by Cyril Davies and Alexis Korner (The Roundhouse in Wardour Street). Having learned most of his blues licks from Long John Baldry and Davy Graham while playing in the coffee bars of Soho, Wizz followed the time honoured trail – busking throughout Europe with many different musicians including at one time a budding young blues-man named Rod Stewart.

Needle Felting Workshop for Beginners

Saturday, 4th August 2018

Come along to a workshop, where you will learn how to sculpt wool using the needle-felting technique. I have just 10 spaces available for each session so to book please email stargazeycrafts@gmail.com and I will request a £5 deposit to secure your place.
The workshop costs £15 and during 3 hours of felty fun we will cover the basics of equipment and you will learn how to create a 3D shape, attach parts, add colour and a bit of personality to your sculpture.
I also ask beginners to pay an additional £1 deposit on the day against needle breakages. This enables me to keep the cost down and restock needles, as you may have a break or two when you are starting out and this seems the fairest way to spread the cost.
If demand is high I will try to put on 2 classes and both will be confirmed once full. There will be a supply of felting kits and wool available to purchase on the day if you wish to continue your new hobby.
I provide all the equipment, materials, tea and coffee. Just bring yourself and some nibbles to share during the half-time break.
Improving mood and cognitive function are just a few of the ways that craft can improve your wellbeing so felt your way to to a healthier, happier lifestyle.

Materials of painting

Monday, 22nd October 2018 until Wednesday, 24th October 2018

Experimental figure

Monday, 29th October 2018 until Wednesday, 31st October 2018

A fantastically liberating course where a grounding in looking is partnered with an energised journey of different experimental and expressive approaches and techniques. Faye is a very inspiring person to be around and her teaching is both considered and structured and yet vital and empowering.
This exciting new course guides students to learn how to convey a sense of the weight, depth and volume of the body through techniques that utilize a broad range of drawing and painting materials and their resulting effects and marks. Some more experimental techinques will include working on a large format and drawing and painting with long sticks to help students work more freely. Much of the course is spent on looking at aspects of the anatomy in an engaging way so that you can create more convincing images of the human form; while the poses that you will work from range from traditional standing and seated poses through to more energised and thrilling examples such as learning to capture the figure in motion.

Sarah Wimperis - Inspired By Vincent : Portraits

Monday, 20th May 2019

BuddyThis workshop is a fun, right-brain stimulating exploration of the style and techniques of Vincent Van Gogh and is open to all levels of artist from professional to complete beginner. You will look at some reproductions of Van Gogh’s works and Sarah will demonstrate some of his techniques before you either create your own version of your choice of his paintings or use his style to paint an image of your own. You may like to bring a reference photo to work from if you would prefer to create an original painting. Sarah advises that you choose an image of a person who isn’t showing too much of their teeth and if you would prefer to paint a self-portrait you will need to bring along a small self-standing mirror.
All abilities very welcome.
A professional artist and illustrator, the only English artist -animator to work on the film ‘Loving Vincent’ and, through sheer practice, an expert in the style of van Gogh. Sarah has exhibited with the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition, The Discerning Eye, the RI and the RWS as well as numerous solo shows. Sarah has written two painting books and illustrated hundreds of other titles as well as working on BBC Jackanory. She is Artist Ambassador for Artlook Software and Artist Ambassador for Royal Talens. Sarah has recently been featured in Cancer Research UK’s national campaign ‘The Missing Third’.

Royal Cornwall Show

Thursday, 6th June 2019 until Saturday, 8th June 2019

Interested in crafts? Planning a wedding? Want to shop in Wadebridge town centre? Is woodland your thing?
Whatever your interest, we aim to make you very welcome here.
There’s something for every member of the family at the Royal Cornwall Show.
It’s the county’s biggest annual event and is brim-full of exhibits and activities which offer so much in the way of entertainment, competition, information, shopping and all that’s best in food and farming.
It's a time and place to meet old friends, conduct business, enjoy Cornwall in all its glory and to welcome thousands of visitors from outside our county.
This is a top agricultural show which attracts increasing numbers of animals, entered into the hundreds of classes which are refined each year. And year on year people travel from further and further afield in the hope of coming away with an award.
Dog and goat sections; rare breed classes. A top flower show and thriving countryside area. Rabbits, cage birds, cavies - even bees get noticed here!
We support and promote Cornish-grown and Cornish-produced food both in the trade section and in our own cafes and restaurants.
Main ring entertainment is mounted on a grand scale and the traditional steam fair is a colourful extravaganza; there are stages and avenues alive with music, song and dance.
You can come to the Royal Cornwall Show with a single-minded ambition to buy a tractor or a car. Here is where you will see them all on display.
